HEAL

The largest study of its kind in addiction science, the HEALing Communities Study (HCS), coordinated with 66 communities in four states, deeply impacted by the opioid epidemic: Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio. The first two images show the initial stand-alone (off NIH's domain) HCS Study website for which I served as lead product designer. Over time, the focus of this work has evolved, the same URL now houses data insights and tools for wider community benefit. Additional photos of HEALs data-centric content are great examples of my progressive disclosure design.

The HEALing Communities Study grant was originally $87 million, which put an enormous amout of pressure on all parties to have the website WOW.

CHALLENGE:
Our primary challenge was handling the conflicting opinions amongst our vast stakeholder group—a multi-institution consortium of NIH executives, academic researchers, data coordination centers and state coalitions. We managed this with a strict agile structure which helped resolve their differences without derailing our progress and effecting our ability to meet tight deadlines.
RESULT:
This project was a true testament of my ability to stay strategically grounded and authentic to the creative vision while stewarding investor confidence through clear articulation of design direction, actively incorporating stakeholder feedback, and guiding teams to trust the process. The result is an intelligent system capable of pulling-in extensive dynamic content including live google maps pointing users to local, life-saving resources.
